Real Madrid ready to ‘sacrifice’ left-back to sign top target

Real Madrid is reportedly planning a summer overhaul at left-back, with Fran Garcia potentially making way for the arrival of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies. The Canadian defender, whose contract with Bayern expires next summer, could be on the move if he does not agree to new terms with the German club.

Negotiations between Bayern and Davies have stalled over wage demands, with the Bundesliga champions offering €14m annually—€4m shy of Davies’ expectations. Reports from SPORT suggest Davies has reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid that would see him earn €18m per season, bolstered by a signing bonus since no transfer fee would be involved.

While Davies’ agent has denied any such agreement, sources close to Real Madrid remain confident of securing the player. If a deal materializes, the 23-year-old would likely become one of the highest earners in Madrid’s squad.

To accommodate Davies, Madrid is expected to offload Fran Garcia, who currently serves as a backup to Ferland Mendy. Despite his defensive reliability, Garcia is seen as surplus to requirements if Davies joins.

Madrid is reportedly open to offers between €15m and €20m for Garcia. The 25-year-old rejoined the club in 2023 after Madrid exercised a €5m buy-back clause following his successful spell at Rayo Vallecano. Since returning, Garcia has made 44 appearances for the first team.

While Madrid appears to be in pole position, Barcelona is also rumored to be interested in Davies. The presence of Hansi Flick, who gave Davies his first big break at Bayern in 2019, could play a pivotal role in Barca’s pursuit. However, the Catalan club’s ongoing financial struggles make them unlikely to match Madrid’s offer.

If Real Madrid can finalize a deal for Davies, they would add one of the world’s premier left-backs to their ranks. His pace, attacking threat, and defensive ability could make him a cornerstone of their squad for years to come. Meanwhile, Fran Garcia’s departure would provide the club with additional funds and ensure squad balance.

As the January window approaches, the Davies saga is one to watch, with Real Madrid seemingly in the driver’s seat.
